When a change storm gathers, market pressure builds, and uncertainty looms leaders often default to familiar responses. Metaphorically speaking there are three options:

The
Prayer

Leaders light a candle, say a prayer and hope that the disruption will pass them by unharmed. They cling to familiar formulas, past victories and existing strengths, hoping they will somehow shield you as the winds of change howl around them.

The Collective
Rain Dance

Leaders drum all teams together and ask them to join the collective rain dance. A barrage of urgent communications, hastily called meetings, increased activity levels and demanding improvements creates a lot of noise.

Firing
Initiatives

Leaders launch multiple, disconnected projects in all directions without a coherent strategy, spreading resources thin and creating confusion rather than focused momentum. It creates movement and mimics progress while the real storm rages on unchecked.

Studies show that many organizations address challenges with change at an incremental to intermediate level.
